Organic synthesis

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Organic synthesis is a way scientists build organic compounds from scratch. These compounds are molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms. They are linked together in special ways called covalent bonds. This work is very important for many different fields of science. It helps the medical and pharmaceutical industries create things we need. For example, scientists can use these methods to make medicines like Ibuprofen.

There are different ways to build these molecules. In a linear synthesis, scientists perform steps one by one in a sequence. Each step creates a new part called a synthetic intermediate. For much bigger molecules, a convergent approach might work better. In this way, scientists prepare several key parts separately. Then, they combine those parts to make the final product.

Many famous scientists have helped shape this field. Robert Burns Woodward is known as the grandfather of modern organic synthesis. He won the Nobel Prize in 1965 for his work. He successfully made a molecule called strychnine through total synthesis. Another important person was Elias James Corey. He won a Nobel Prize in 1990 for retrosynthetic design. This method involves planning a molecule by working backward from the end.

Making these molecules requires careful tools and steps. Sometimes, reactions need heat to happen faster. Scientists use a reflux condenser to keep the liquid from boiling away. This glass tool cools the steam so it drips back down. To clean the product, scientists use different separation methods. They might use liquid-liquid extraction to separate two liquids. This works because some liquids prefer to stay with similar types.

If the product is a solid, scientists use filtration. They can use gravity to pull liquid through paper. Or, they can use a vacuum to suck liquid through a funnel. This leaves the solid product behind on the paper.

Scientists also use machines to check their work. They use tools like mass spectrometry to see the structure. This ensures the new molecule is exactly what they intended to build.
