Tetrasodium EDTA

physical science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Tetrasodium EDTA is a specific type of chemical salt. It is used widely as a source of a chelating agent called EDTA4-. A chelating agent is a substance that can grab and hold onto other molecules. This salt appears as a white solid in its pure form. It is highly soluble, which means it dissolves very easily in water.

Because it is so useful in many industries, it is a common component in various products. It is also known by the name Dissolvine E-39. Scientists also classify it as a salt of edetic acid.

The creation of this salt involves a process called neutralization. This occurs when ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid reacts with four equivalents of sodium hydroxide. Sodium hydroxide is a strong base. This reaction transforms the acid into the salt we call tetrasodium EDTA. Commercial samples are often found in a hydrated state. This means the salt contains water molecules, such as Na4EDTA.4H2O.

Interestingly, the anhydrous and hydrated forms produce solutions with the same properties. This remains true as long as the solutions maintain the same pH level.

When you look at how this substance behaves in water, the chemistry is quite specific. A 1% aqueous solution has a pH of approximately 11.3. This high number indicates that the solution is quite basic. If you dissolve the salt in neutral water, a chemical change occurs. The substance partially converts into H2EDTA2-. This change in structure is part of how the salt interacts with its environment.

Understanding these shifts helps scientists use the substance correctly in different mixtures.

History shows that this substance has been known to researchers since at least 1954.

Since then, it has become a major part of many industrial processes. One notable example of its importance is found in patent records. The firm Procter and Gamble is a major player in this field. They are the assignee on 5% of all patents at the USPTO that contain this substance. This high percentage shows how much specialized knowledge exists regarding its use.

Tetrasodium EDTA has many practical uses in everyday products. It is used most notably in the cosmetics industry. You can find it in various hair and skin care products.

Beyond personal care, it serves a heavy-duty industrial purpose. It helps create products used to remove rust and corrosion. It can also remove scale from several types of metal. This includes copper, brass, and other surfaces. It is even effective on ferrous metal surfaces.

In some mechanical applications, the concentration of the substance is very specific. For example, it is used in engine coolant system flushes. In some of these flushes, tetrasodium EDTA is the main active ingredient. To achieve the right cleaning power, these products use a concentration of 6%.

This allows the chelating agent to work effectively within the cooling system. By grabbing onto mineral buildup, it helps keep the engine parts clean.

Because of its many roles, tetrasodium EDTA is categorized in several ways. It is classified as an acetic acid derivative and a tertiary amine. It also serves as a preservative to help products stay stable. In the food and additive industry, it is known as an E-number additive.

It can even be categorized as an antidote in certain scientific contexts. This wide range of categories shows how many different systems rely on its unique ability to bind with other substances.
