Max Theiler was a doctor and a scientist. He was born in South Africa. He studied how to fight sickness. He moved to the United States to do research.

Max worked to stop a sickness called yellow fever. He wanted to make a vaccine. A vaccine is a tool that helps the body stay safe from germs. Max and his team used a special way to make it. They grew the virus in chicken embryos. An embryo is a tiny life inside an egg. They did this over 100 times.

They wanted to make a weak version of the virus. They named this weak version "17D." This weak virus did not kill mice. It helped them stay healthy. This meant the vaccine was safe.

Between 1940 and 1947, they made 28 million doses. This helped end yellow fever as a big sickness. For this work, Max won the Nobel Prize in 1951. He was the first person born in Africa to win it.
