He was born in New York City in 1914. As a student, he studied very hard. He went to the City College of New York. He also went to New York University School of Medicine.

Salk did not want to treat just one person at a time. He wanted to help everyone. This led him to study viruses. A virus is a tiny germ that can make people sick.

Salk worked at the University of Pittsburgh. He spent seven years making a vaccine for polio. A vaccine is a way to teach the body to fight a germ.

Salk used a killed virus for his vaccine. He thought this was a safe way. In 1954, one million children took part in tests. These children were called polio pioneers.

The vaccine was announced as safe in April 1955. Salk did not want to make money from it. He wanted the vaccine to reach the whole world. By 1959, it reached about 90 countries. In the United States, polio was gone in less than 25 years.
