A vaccine is a way to stop this sickness. There are two main types of vaccines.

The first type is the IPV. This is a shot given by an injection. It uses an inactivated virus, which means the virus is killed. The IPV is very safe. It helps the body make antibodies. Antibodies are parts of the body that fight germs.

The second type is the OPV. This is an oral vaccine. It is given by mouth. This vaccine uses a weakened virus. It is easy to give to many people at once. It does not need needles.

These vaccines have changed the world. In 1988, about 350,000 people had polio. By 2018, only 33 cases were reported. The WHO, a group that studies health, says all children should get these vaccines. New vaccines are being made to keep people even safer.
