The DPT vaccine is a special shot. It helps people stay safe from three diseases. These are diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis. Pertussis is also called whooping cough.

Tetanus can cause lockjaw. The vaccine works by teaching the body to fight.

This shot uses something called a toxoid. A toxoid is a part of a germ that cannot cause disease. It is made from a toxin, which is a harmful substance the germ makes. The vaccine uses these safe parts to start an immune response. This means your body learns how to fight the real germ later. The vaccine does not have any live germs in it. Because of this, it is safe for almost everyone to use.

There are two main types of these shots. One type uses whole cells from the germ. We call this DTwP. The other type is acellular, which means it uses only parts of the germ. We call this DTaP. The acellular shot may cause fewer side effects.
