Barry Marshall is a famous doctor from Australia. He wanted to know why people get stomach ulcers. An ulcer is a sore in the stomach. For a long time, doctors thought stress caused these sores. They also thought spicy food was the cause.

Barry and his friend Robin Warren found something new. They found tiny living things in the stomach. These are called bacteria. They named these bacteria Helicobacter pylori.

Many doctors did not believe them. They thought the stomach was too acidic for bugs to live there. To prove his idea, Barry did something brave. He drank a liquid filled with the bacteria.

Soon, Barry felt very sick. He had bad breath and felt sick to his stomach. Doctors looked inside him and saw the bacteria were there. This proved the bacteria caused the sickness.

Because of this discovery, Barry won the Nobel Prize. This is a very big award for science. Now, doctors use medicine to kill the bacteria. This helps many people feel better.
