Carl Woese was a famous scientist. He studied tiny living things called microbes. For a long time, people thought microbes were one big group. They thought all microbes were very similar.

In 1977, Woese changed this idea. He and George Fox studied a part of the cell. They looked at 16S ribosomal RNA. This is a tiny part that helps cells make proteins. By looking at this RNA, they saw a big difference. They found a third group of life called Archaea. This group is not the same as bacteria. It is also not the same as other life like plants or animals.

Woese used this to make a new tree of life. He divided all life into three domains. These are Bacteria, Archaea, and Eucarya. This work helps us find life on other planets. Some Archaea live in very harsh places. This tells us how life might start in space. Woese won many big awards for his work. He helped us see the history of life on Earth.
