Barry Marshall is a famous doctor from Australia. He changed how we understand stomach health. For many years, doctors believed that stomach ulcers were not caused by germs. They thought stress or spicy foods caused these sores. Marshall and his colleague, Robin Warren, believed something else was happening. They thought a tiny living thing called a bacterium was the cause.

This bacterium is named Helicobacter pylori. It is a tiny, spiral-shaped organism. Marshall and Warren found these bacteria living in the stomachs of people with gastritis. Gastritis is when the stomach lining becomes very red and swollen. They discovered that these bacteria could live in the stomach's acid. This was a big surprise to other scientists. Most people thought the acid would kill any bacteria.

In 1982, the two doctors started their research together. They had a hard job finding proof. At first, their tests did not seem to work. They found out the lab was throwing samples away too fast. H. pylori grows much slower than other germs. Once they fixed this, they finally saw the bacteria. In 1984, Marshall decided to test his idea on himself. He drank a liquid filled with the bacteria to see what would happen.

Marshall got sick very quickly after drinking the liquid. Within three days, he had bad breath and felt sick. He also had a problem called achlorhydria, which means his stomach had no acid. By the eighth day, he had vomiting and stomach swelling. Doctors used an endoscopy to look inside his stomach. An endoscopy is a tool used to see inside the body. They saw the bacteria had moved in and caused inflammation.

This brave test proved that H. pylori causes stomach issues. Because of this, Marshall and Warren won the Nobel Prize in 2005. This is one of the highest awards in the world. Now, doctors use antibiotics to kill the bacteria and cure ulcers. Marshall still works hard to study infectious diseases. He even started a group called the Noisy Guts Project. His work helps millions of people feel better every day.
