Helicobacter pylori is a tiny living thing called a bacterium.

It lives inside the stomachs of many people around the world. Most people who have it do not feel sick at all. In fact, over half of the world's population is infected.

However, some types of this bacterium can cause hard jobs for the body. They can lead to things like gastritis, which is when the stomach lining becomes sore and red.

If the infection stays for a long time, it can cause even more serious problems. It is the only bacterium known to cause cancer.

This bacterium has a special shape to help it survive. It has a helical body, which means it looks like a spiral or an S shape.

This shape helps it move through the thick, sticky mucus that protects the stomach. It uses little tail-like parts called flagella to swim through that mucus.

The bacteria also use a special protein called urease to help them. This protein makes up about 10% of their total weight.

This helps them live in the harsh environment of the stomach.

For a long time, people did not know why some people got stomach ulcers. They knew there was a link, but they did not know the cause. In 1983, two scientists named Barry Marshall and Robin Warren described the bacterium.

They showed that this bacterium was the cause of gastric ulcers. Their discovery was so important that they won the Nobel Prize in 2005.

They helped the world understand how these tiny things work.

There are many important facts about how this infection changes over time. It can start as gastritis, which is inflammation of the stomach lining.

If it lasts a long time, it becomes chronic gastritis. This can lead to ulcers in the stomach or the duodenum, which is the start of the intestine.

Some bacteria can even turn into a shape called a coccoid form to hide from the immune system. This helps them stay in the body even when it is hard to survive.

We can see how these bacteria connect to our health and our world. While they can cause cancer, some studies say they might have a protective effect. They might help protect against things like asthma or certain types of food allergies.

In 2023, it was estimated that about two-thirds of the world's population had the infection. It is more common in developing countries.

Today, many people use antibiotics and other medicines to clear the infection. This helps keep people healthy and stops the bacteria from spreading.
