Human papillomavirus, or HPV, is a group of more than 200 different viruses.

These tiny germs only affect humans. Most people will get an HPV infection at some point in their lives. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the whole world.

For many people, the body handles the virus easily. About 90% of these infections go away on their own within two years. Most infections show no signs or symptoms at all.

Sometimes the virus stays in the body for a long time. This is called a persistent infection. When this happens, the virus can cause warts or even cancer.

Warts are caused by cells growing too fast on the skin. Some types, like HPV 6 and 11, often cause genital warts. These same types can also cause warts in the throat. This rare condition is called laryngeal papillomatosis. It can sometimes make it hard for a person to breathe.

Scientists have studied these viruses for a long time. People have known about warts since ancient Greece. However, we did not know they were caused by viruses until 1907. A doctor named Giuseppe Ciuffo proved this by using wart extract on skin.

Today, we know there are many different types of HPV. Some types are high-risk, which means they are more likely to cause cancer.

There are many important numbers to know about HPV and health. High-risk types like HPV 16 and 18 cause 70% of all cervical cancers. In the United States, HPV causes about 37,300 cases of cancer every year. In 2020, cervical cancer caused about 604,000 new cases worldwide. About 90% of those cases happened in low and middle income countries.

This is because those areas may not have enough screening tests.

We have good ways to stay healthy and manage this virus. There are vaccines that can prevent the most common types of infection.

Doctors also use special tests to look for the virus directly. Finding the virus early through screening helps people get better treatment. This is similar to how a smoke alarm helps you find a fire early. Staying informed helps keep the world much safer from these germs.
