James Watson was a famous American scientist.

He spent his life studying how living things work. He was a biologist and a geneticist. Genetics is the study of how traits pass from parents to children. Watson was born in Chicago on April 6, 1928. As a young boy, he loved watching birds. He even thought about studying birds for his job. Later, he changed his focus to the secrets of life.

In 1953, Watson made a huge discovery about DNA. DNA is the molecule that carries information in all living things. He worked with a scientist named Francis Crick. Together, they found that DNA has a shape called a double helix. A double helix looks like a long, twisted ladder.

To find this shape, they used data from other researchers. This included work by Rosalind Franklin and Raymond Gosling. Franklin used X-rays to take pictures of DNA molecules. Watson and Crick used these pictures to build their famous model.

Watson had a very busy career in science. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1947. Then, he earned his doctorate from Indiana University in 1950. He worked at the University of Cambridge in England. There, he met his partner, Francis Crick. Later, he worked at Harvard University for many years. He also led the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. He helped make that place a top center for research.

Many big things happened during his time as a scientist. In 1962, Watson won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He shared this prize with Crick and Maurice Wilkins.

This prize was for their work on the structure of DNA. Between 1988 and 1992, he helped start the Human Genome Project. This was a massive task to map all human genes. The project was finally finished in the year 2003. Watson also wrote many books about science for others to read.

Even though he was a great scientist, Watson was also controversial. He made some comments about race and intelligence that were very wrong. Many people criticized him for these views. Because of this, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory ended its ties with him in 2019. He also made unkind comments about Rosalind Franklin. People criticized him for not giving her enough credit for her hard work. His life shows how science can be both amazing and complicated.
