The Double Helix

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

James Watson wrote a book called "The Double Helix." It was published in 1968. This book is a personal memoir about a huge scientific discovery. It tells the story of finding the shape of DNA. DNA is a tiny part of life that holds many secrets. The book is very famous for its personal style. In 1998, the Modern Library named it number 7 on a list of the 100 best nonfiction books of the 20th century.

Finding the shape of DNA was a big job. Watson worked with a scientist named Francis Crick. They found the double helix shape in 1953. This discovery changed how we understand biology. Many people call this a major moment in science history. The book shows how scientists work together and sometimes struggle. It gives a first-person view of how these big ideas are found.

Writing the book was not always easy for Watson. At first, Harvard University Press wanted to publish it. However, they dropped the plan after Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins protested. Instead, Atheneum published it in the United States. Weidenfeld & Nicolson published it in the UK. The book has caused many arguments since it first came out. Some people thought the way Watson wrote about the discovery was not fair.

Many people have criticized the book for its views. Some critics say Watson took data from others without asking. Others say he was not kind to Rosalind Franklin. She was a scientist who also worked on DNA at King's College, London. She had passed away by the time Watson wrote his book. In a newer edition, Watson said his first impressions of her were often wrong. He later called her work superb and noted the hard barriers she faced as a woman.

There are many ways to learn more about this story today. In 2012, a special version of the book was released. It was edited by Alex Gann and Jan Witkowski. This version has over three hundred notes and many old photos. It also includes letters from scientists like Crick and Pauling. You can even watch a TV show called "Life Story" about these events. It was a drama made by the BBC that won a BAFTA award.
