The Double Helix

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

James Watson wrote a book called "The Double Helix." It came out in 1968. The book tells the story of finding the shape of DNA. DNA is a part of life. Watson found this shape with Francis Crick in 1953. This book is very famous. One group even put it on a list of the 100 best books of the 20th century.

But the book also caused many arguments. Some people thought Watson was not fair. They said he did not give enough credit to Rosalind Franklin. She was a scientist who also worked on DNA. Some people felt he took data from others without asking.

Watson also wrote about how hard it was for women in science. In the end of his book, he said he was wrong about Franklin. He called her work superb. A new version of the book came out in 2012. It has many old letters and photos inside. It helps us see the whole story of this big discovery.
