Crookes used a tool called spectroscopy. This tool studies light to find out what things are made of. Using this, he found a new element. He named it thallium. It showed a bright green line in its light.

He also made a special glass tube. We call this a Crookes tube. He used it to study rays in a vacuum. A vacuum is a space with almost no air. He saw these rays move in straight lines. He thought they were a new state of matter. He called it radiant matter. Today, we call this plasma.

Crookes was very busy. He worked in a large lab at his home. He worked until after midnight most nights. He even made special lenses for sunglasses. These lenses block ultraviolet light from the sun.
