Long ago, doctors had a special idea about health.

They thought our bodies held four fluids. These were blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile.

To stay well, these fluids needed to be balanced. They had to be mixed in the right amounts. If one fluid was too high or too low, a person might get sick.

Even the weather could change these fluids. For example, warm foods might make more yellow bile. Cold foods might make more phlegm.

Doctors tried to fix the mix to help people. They used different ways to remove extra fluids. This was how they cared for the sick.

Today, we know this idea was not quite right. But it was a very important way of thinking for a long time.
