Revenge is defined as committing a harmful action against a person or group. This action is a response to a grievance. A grievance can be a real injury or a perceived one.

Scholars often distinguish vengeful justice from formal systems. These formal systems include distributive justice or restorative justice. Vengeful forms are often called primitive or retributive justice. This distinction is important for understanding how societies handle conflict.

Social psychologists study why people seek revenge. Ian McKee states that the desire for power motivates vengeful behavior. People use it for impression management to protect their status. They do not want to lose face or authority. In many societies, revenge is tied to the concept of honor. An avenger may feel they are restoring a lost dignity. Michael Ignatieff describes it as a desire to honor the memory of the dead. This can turn honor into a heritage that passes through generations.

When honor is compromised, it can trigger a cycle of retaliation. This cycle can involve entire communities or families. These long-term cycles are known as feuds. Feuds are patterns of provocation and retaliation between groups. They were common in pre-industrial societies, especially in the Mediterranean. In Albania, this is known as gjakmarrja, or blood feuds. These feuds can last for many generations. Similar traditions exist in Kurdish regions of Turkey and Papua New Guinea.

Different cultures have specific names for these practices. In Japan, revenge killings were called katakiuchi. These acts could involve the relatives of an offender. Today, katakiuchi is mostly pursued through peaceful means. History also shows the distinction between punishment and revenge. Philosophers argue that punishment is a rational act for the future. It aims to prevent wrongdoing from being repeated. Revenge, however, is motivated by a desire to see a transgressor suffer. It is driven by anger rather than logic.

Psychologists note that revenge is often an inference. There is no objective standard to declare an act as revenge. It is a label that observers assign to an action. Some people also experience the just-world fallacy. This belief can increase distress and motivate a search for justice. Research shows that a vengeful disposition can affect health. Strong desires for revenge correlate with post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. It can also be linked to psychiatric morbidity.

Revenge is a massive theme in art and literature.

In literature, authors use it to create tension. Many stories use dramatic irony to do this. This is when the audience knows more than the characters. Common themes in revenge stories include disguise and secrecy. They may also include power, violence, or even cannibalism. Famous examples include Shakespeare's Hamlet and Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo. Even modern novels like Gone Girl use these themes.

In the modern age, the internet has created new ways to seek revenge. Consumers may target businesses with negative online reviews. This can cause significant damage to a corporation's reputation. Social media platforms also allow for new forms of public retaliation. One harmful example is revenge porn. This involves sharing intimate images to cause shame and humiliation. This behavior often relies on the anonymity provided by the internet. It is a digital version of seeking to harm another's reputation.

Humans are not the only species that exhibit vengeful behavior. Primatologists like Frans de Waal have studied this in primates. Chimpanzees often use revenge to seek dominance. If one chimpanzee helps another defeat an opponent, the opponent may retaliate later. Other animals like lions, elephants, and crows also show these patterns. Professor John Marzluff has studied crows that carry feuds. Even fish have been observed to demonstrate vengeful actions. This suggests the drive for revenge is found across many different species.
