Inside these buildings, you will find several important rooms. One type is a courtroom, which is a space where a judge leads a case. Another type is called a chamber, which is a private office for a judge. Many courthouses also have offices for staff like court clerks. These clerks help by managing important legal papers and documents.

In the United States, most counties have their own courthouse. A textbook from 2014 estimated there are roughly 17,000 courthouses in the country. Most of these are located in the county seat, which is the main town for that area. Some large counties even have extra offices called satellite or annex offices. These buildings can hold many different things at once. For example, Philadelphia City Hall houses many different parts of the government. Most of its floor space is used for the Civil Division of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

The way courthouses look has changed a lot over time. Early American courthouses were very simple with plain furniture. By the middle of the 19th century, they became much more grand. They started to feature columns, domes, and large clock towers. Many buildings have many steps leading up to a single set of doors. This design is meant to make the building look strong and solid. Today, they can look like old stone fortresses or modern tall towers.

Safety is a very big priority for modern courthouse design. Because many different people visit, architects must plan for security. They often use secure entrance vestibules to check for weapons or other items.

Large buildings often have separate entrances for the public, judges, and prisoners. This helps keep people separate as they move through the building. These separate paths are called circulation pathways. They ensure that people in custody do not run into witnesses or jurors. This design helps keep everyone in the building safe and calm.

Courthouses are important symbols in many different countries. In North America, the term "courthouse" is very common. In much of Europe, people call these buildings a "palace of justice." In Canada, each municipality builds its own courthouse. One famous example is the Old City Hall in Toronto. It was completed in 1899 and was designed by E.J. Lennox. It is built with large stones and has many beautiful arches. This building has been a national historical site since 1989.
