These facilities give officers a place to work and stay organized. In large cities, there are often many different stations. Some stations serve as small offices for local areas. Other stations act as big headquarters for entire regions. The role of a station changes based on the size of the police group.

Most stations have many different rooms for specific jobs. Officers use office spaces to complete their paperwork and tasks. There is usually a reception area for people to visit. Some stations have holding cells to keep people for a short time.

Different parts of the world use different names for these places. In the United States, some groups call them barracks or district offices. Large cities like New York use the word precinct. In India, people call them a thana. This name comes from the Persian word sthan, which means a location.

In Scotland, they might be called a police office. Some people even use informal names like "cop shop" or "nick."

Stations come in many unique shapes and sizes. In Japan, police use small neighborhood offices called kōban. These are much smaller than a regular station. Some agencies use mobile police stations inside large trucks or vans.

These can move to big events to help people. Dubai uses "Smart Police Stations" with interactive kiosks. These allow people to file reports using video calls instead of meeting an officer in person. This idea started in 2017.

Many stations are separate buildings on their own. However, some small towns combine them with other buildings. A station might be inside a town hall or a fire station. Some are even located inside busy places like airports or train stations. In Greece, there are 1,024 police stations across the country. Each one helps keep the citizens in its area safe.
