In a courtroom, you might notice a physical barrier. This divider is known as the bar.

It can be a railing or a wall. The bar separates the people in a trial. Lawyers and judges sit on one side. The public sits on the other side.

This separation helps keep the trial organized. It marks where the legal work happens.

This idea started a long time ago. It comes from medieval Europe. Back then, furniture was used to divide the room. This barrier kept the public away from court staff. It defined areas for lawyers and court officials. Modern courts in the U.S. and Europe still use this. They use partitions to keep the areas distinct. This rule is followed in nearly all courts.

The word bar also means the legal profession. In the United States, joining is a big step. You must follow a qualifying procedure to get a license. Most people must graduate from a law school first. Then, they must pass a written test. This test is called the bar examination. If a lawyer breaks rules, they are disbarred. This means they lose their license to practice.

There are different ways to take these tests. Many U.S. states use the Multistate Bar Examination. This is called the MBE. It is a multiple-choice test. Some states also use the Uniform Bar Examination. This one includes the MBE as well. There is also a special patent bar. This test is for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. It is for people with science or engineering backgrounds.

Lawyers have different roles in different places. In the United Kingdom, the law is split. There are barristers and there are solicitors. In Scotland, barristers are called advocates. Being called to the bar means you are a barrister. There is even an inner bar for senior members. The bar and the bench work together. The bar represents clients, while the bench includes judges.
