Felony

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A felony is a very serious crime. In the past, the rules were quite harsh. Under old English laws, a person could lose their land. They could even lose their life. Other crimes were called misdemeanors. These were seen as less serious.

Rules change in different places. In the United States, a felony is a crime with a big punishment. It can mean death or more than one year in prison. Even if a person gets a short sentence, the crime is still a felony. In Germany, a felony must have a punishment of at least one year.

Some countries do not use these words anymore. England and Wales use new names for crimes. They use terms like indictable offenses. These are serious crimes tried by a jury. Other crimes are called summary offenses.

In Cameroon, a felony is very serious. It is a crime with a sentence of more than 10 years. It can also mean the death penalty. These rules help courts decide how to handle each case.
