The Moon travels in an orbit. This is the path it follows around Earth. The orbit is not a perfect circle. It is an ellipse, which is an oval shape. Because of this shape, the Moon gets closer and farther away. The closest point is called perigee. The farthest point is called apogee.

The average distance is about 384,400 kilometers. This distance is very large. It is about 30 times wider than Earth. Light can travel this distance in 1.3 seconds.

Scientists use lasers to measure this distance very well. They bounce laser light off reflectors on the Moon. This helps them see tiny changes. We also know the Moon is moving away. It moves about 3.8 centimeters away every year. This happens because of tidal forces. These are the pulls from the gravity of Earth and Moon.
