It is a trip to the holy city of Mecca. This trip is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. This means it is a very important duty. All adult Muslims who are able should go at least once. This includes having enough money and being healthy.

Many people go on this trip each year. In 2012, over three million people went.

During Hajj, people wear special white clothes called Ihram. Men wear two pieces of plain white cloth. This shows that everyone is equal. It does not matter if a person is rich or poor.

Pilgrims do many things during their trip. They walk seven times around the Kaaba. The Kaaba is a cube-shaped building.

They also walk between two hills named Safa and Marwah. Some people stand on Mount Arafat to pray. They may also throw stones at three pillars. This is a symbolic act. The Hajj follows the ways of the prophet Muhammad. It also honors the history of Abraham.
