The Islamic New Year is a significant time for many people. It is also known as the Hijri New Year. This day marks the beginning of a new lunar Hijri year. It is the moment when the year count increases by one. This calendar is essential for many religious duties. For example, it helps determine the timing of prayer and fasting during Ramadan. It also marks the dates for pilgrimage and various holy festivals.

This calendar operates using a lunar system. A lunar calendar follows the cycles of the moon rather than the sun. In this system, a new day does not begin at midnight. Instead, a day starts at the moment of sunset. This means the first day of the month, Muharram, begins when the sun goes down. For instance, 1 Muharram 1432 AH began at sunset on 6 December 2010. It lasted until the next sunset occurred.

There are different ways to decide when a new month begins. Some Islamic organizations use local sightings of the moon. They look at the sky to see the new moon. Other institutions use astronomical calculations. These are mathematical methods to predict the moon's position. Most Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia, follow these mathematical calculations. Because of these different methods, dates can vary. There might be a difference of one or two days between countries.

Saudi Arabia uses a specific system called the Umm al-Qura calendar. This is a tabular calendar, meaning it is based on math rather than sightings. The current version of this scheme was introduced in 1423 AH. This occurred on 15 March 2002. This calendar has undergone several reforms in recent years. Using a mathematical scheme helps predict future dates with more certainty. However, the motion of the sun and moon is not perfectly linear. This can still cause small differences in predicted dates.

The history of this calendar is tied to a major event. This event is called the Hijrah. The Hijrah was the emigration of Muhammad and his followers. They moved from the city of Mecca to Medina. This event took place in 622 CE. This year serves as the epoch, or the starting reference date, for the Islamic era.

Different groups hold different beliefs regarding this history. Twelver Shia Muslims have a different view of the new year. They believe the Islamic new year is the first of Rabi' al-Awwal. They hold this view because they believe that is the month the Hijrah occurred. This difference affects how they record historical events. For example, they may date the battle of Karbala differently. Shias say it happened in 60 AH. Sunnis say it happened in 61 AH.

The Islamic calendar behaves differently than the Gregorian calendar. The Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar. A lunar year is shorter than a solar year. Specifically, it is eleven to twelve days shorter. Because of this, the Islamic New Year does not fall on the same date every year. The dates shift earlier in the Gregorian year over time. For example, 1446 AH starts on 8 July 2024. The following year, 1447 AH, starts on 26 June 2025.

Looking ahead, we can estimate future starting dates. The year 1448 AH is estimated for 16 June 2026. The year 1449 AH is estimated for 6 June 2027. The year 1450 AH is estimated for 25 May 2028. These dates are based on the Umm al-Qura calendar. Other calendars might show slightly different days. This is why the timing of the new year is a subject of careful study. It remains a vital part of life for many people across 24 countries.
