It serves as the capital of the Razavi Khorasan province. The city is the second-most populous city in Iran. According to the 2016 census, it has a population of about 3,400,000 people. This population includes the areas of Mashhad Taman and Torqabeh. Mashhad is a vital religious and cultural hub for the country. In 2009, it was officially called "The spiritual capital of Iran."

The city's importance is centered on the Imam Reza shrine.

This site is the most pilgrimaged location in Shiaism. Nearly 30 million people visit the shrine every year. The shrine houses the tomb of Ali al-Rida, the eighth Shia Imam. The Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid is also buried within the same complex. This religious significance has shaped the city's growth for many centuries. The shrine has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over a millennium.

The history of the area begins with very ancient roots.

Greek sources mention Alexander the Great passing through this land in 330 BC. At that time, the region was called "Susia." Some Muslim historians attribute the founding of the original settlement to Alexander. The ancient Parthian city of Patigrabanâ may have also been located here. In the 9th century, the settlement was a small village called Sanabad. It sat on the ancient Silk Road near the town of Tus.

As time passed, the small village transformed into a major city.

The name Mashhad comes from Arabic and means "place of martyrdom." This name refers to the death of Imam Reza. During the Safavid Empire, the city was eventually renamed from Sanabad to Mashhad. The city grew as the nearby town of Tus declined. In 1389, the town of Tus was destroyed by Miran Shah. Many survivors of that event moved to the shelter of the 'Alid sanctuary. This helped Mashhad become the dominant capital of the district.

Many different dynasties have ruled Mashhad throughout history.

Between 1736 and 1796, Mashhad was the capital of Afsharid Iran. This dynasty was founded by Nader Shah. His tomb is located within the city today.

The city also saw significant activity during the Timurid and Safavid eras. The Safavids built many religious structures, such as madrasahs, near the shrine. However, the city faced many raids from the Uzbeks during the 16th century. In 1912, Russian artillery fire bombed the city and damaged the golden dome.

Mashhad is also a place of great literary and artistic importance.

The famous Persian poet Ferdowsi was born in the nearby town of Tus. Many institutions in Mashhad carry his name. The city has also produced significant modern figures. These include the poet Mehdi Akhavan-Sales and the singer Mohammad-Reza Shajarian. Even the local food reflects its complex history. The dish "sholeh Mashhadi" is thought to have Mongolian origins from the era of invasions.

In the modern era, the city has undergone rapid development.

Modernization accelerated under Reza Shah in the early 20th century. The city established its first power station in 1936. It also began its first urban transport service with two buses that same year. Today, the city features a complex transport network. This includes a metro system and light rail transit.
