It was located in a fertile oasis near the modern city of Mary in Turkmenistan. For thousands of years, it served as a vital hub on the historical Silk Road. This network of trade routes connected many different parts of the world. Because of its location, Merv became a place where diverse cultures and ideas met. It was one of the most important urban centers in the history of the region.

Human settlements have existed at the site of Merv since the 3rd millennium BC.

The city's history is marked by many different ruling powers. It began as part of the Achaemenid Empire, where it was known as Margiana. Later, it was ruled by Hellenistic kings and the Parthians. The Sassanian Empire also held control for nearly four centuries.

During this Sassanian era, the city minted its own coins to document its rule. Merv changed hands many times, including under the Arabs, Ghaznavids, and Seljuqs.

In the 9th century, Merv reached a high level of political importance. The caliph al-Ma'mun made the city the seat of his power. During this time, Merv served as the capital of the entire Islamic caliphate. Later, it became the seat of the Tahirid governors of Khorasan. The city was also a major center for various religions. It was a holy site in Zoroastrianism, which called it one of sixteen perfect lands. It also hosted significant Christian, Buddhist, and Shia Muslim communities.

During the 11th and 12th centuries, Merv entered a golden age.

It served as the capital of the Great Seljuk Empire. During this period, Merv became a premier center for Islamic science and culture. It attracted many famous intellectuals, including the polymath Omar Khayyam. Khayyam spent years working at the city's observatory. The city was home to at least 10 giant libraries. One library, located inside a major mosque, contained 12,000 volumes. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Merv may have been the largest city in the world. Its population is estimated to have reached as many as 500,000 people. At this time, it was often called "Merv the Great."

This era of prosperity ended due to violent conflict. In 1221, an invading Mongol horde arrived at the city. The resulting destruction was massive and changed the region forever. Historical accounts suggest the entire population was killed. It is reported that Tolui Khan slaughtered 700,000 people during this event. Although the city was partly rebuilt, it never regained its former wealth. A final destruction occurred between 1788 and 1789 when Shah Murad razed the city. By the 1800s, the area was almost completely deserted.

Today, the site is a protected historical area.
