He ruled from the year 680 until 683. His father, Mu'awiya I, chose him to be the next leader. This was the first time a father passed power to his son. Many people did not like this new way of ruling. They believed leaders should be chosen by others.

Some leaders, like Husayn ibn Ali, refused to follow Yazid. Husayn was the grandson of the prophet Muhammad. This led to a fight called the Battle of Karbala. In this battle, Yazid's forces killed Husayn and his small group. This event made many people very angry with Yazid.

Other fights broke out in cities like Medina and Mecca. Yazid sent armies to stop these rebellions. His rule also saw many changes in how the land was kept safe. He focused on defending Syria instead of taking new lands. After Yazid died, the land fell into a long civil war.
