These islands belong to the country of Eritrea. They sit about 58 kilometers east of Massawa, which is a big city in the region. The whole group covers about 643 square kilometers of ocean and land. It is made of two large islands and 124 smaller ones. Most of these islands do not have people living on them. Only three islands are permanently inhabited. These are Dahlak Kebir, Nora, and Dohul. Dahlak Kebir is the largest and most crowded island.

Life on the islands is tied closely to the sea and the land. The people who live there speak a language called Dahlik. They follow a traditional way of life. Many people work as fishers to catch food from the Red Sea. Others are shepherds who look after animals. They also raise camels on the islands. For a very long time, the islands have been famous for pearls. People have been finding pearls in these waters since the time of the Romans. Even today, the local pearl fisheries produce many pearls.

Nature is very busy and bright in the archipelago. The islands have coral reefs and shallow areas called shoals. These spots are full of marine life. You might see dolphins, dugongs, sharks, or turtles swimming in the water. Some islands have green mangroves growing near the edge. Other parts have salt brush scrub. The islands are also a very important place for birds. Many different kinds of birds live here. You can find white-eyed gulls, sooty falcons, and lesser crested terns.

History shows that many different groups have controlled these islands. Long ago, a line of sultans ruled the islands from about 1140 to 1249. These rulers had real political and military power. Later, the Ottoman Turks conquered the islands in 1517. In the 1800s, the islands were under the rule of Egypt. Then, the Italians occupied Eritrea in 1889. They used the island of Nokra as a prison camp. During the Cold War, the Soviet Navy even had a base on Nokra. This shows how important the location has been for many years.

Today, the islands are a peaceful part of Eritrea. This happened after Eritrea gained independence in 1993. More people are visiting the islands now for fun. Many travelers take boats from Massawa to reach the islands. People love to go scuba diving or snorkeling in the clear water. They want to see the colorful reefs and the many sea animals. The islands remain a special place where history and nature meet.
