Ancient stories like the Buddhist Jataka tales mention the islands. Many different groups have ruled the islands over the years. The Cheras and the Pallavas once had control. The Chola kingdom also ruled in the 11th century. Later, the Portuguese arrived in the late 15th century. Eventually, the British Empire took control in 1799. After India became independent in 1947, the islands became part of India.

Life on the islands is tied to the sea.
