As of 2024, about 6.2 million people live in this territory. It is a partially recognised state. This means some countries treat it as independent, while others do not.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Around 10,000 years ago, people lived here during the Neolithic age. These ancient shepherds raised cows and other livestock. They left behind beautiful rock art.

At the Laas Geel site, paintings show decorated cows and wild animals. In the Dhambalin region, one painting shows a hunter on a horse. Some of these artworks are 5,000 years old. Other sites, like Karinhegane, have paintings of mythical animals. These works show how much people cared about their world.

In ancient times, Somaliland was a major center for trade. It may have been the location of the ancient Land of Punt.

People there traded gold, ivory, and frankincense. They also traded spices and myrrh. They used special ships called beden to carry goods across the sea. These traders connected with many famous groups. They worked with the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and even the Chinese. This trade made the region a very busy and important place.

History shows many different groups ruled this land. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Adal Sultanate was based in Zeila.

Later, the Isaaq Sultanate emerged in the middle of the 18th century. In the late 1800s, the United Kingdom signed deals with local clans. This created the Somaliland Protectorate. The United Kingdom granted independence on 26 June 1960.

Five days later, the state joined with the former Italian Somalia to form the Somali Republic.

The union between the two states was difficult. After a ten-year war, Somaliland declared its independence again in 1991.
