As of 2024, the area has approximately 6.2 million people. While it functions as a state, it lacks full international recognition. It is a member of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization.

Human history in this region stretches back thousands of years. During the Neolithic age, roughly 10,000 years ago, ancient shepherds lived here. They raised livestock like cows and left behind vibrant rock art.

The Laas Geel complex near Hargeisa contains paintings that are 5,000 years old. These artworks depict decorated cows and various wild animals. In the Dhambalin region, rock art shows one of the earliest known depictions of a hunter on horseback. Other sites, such as Karinhegane, feature paintings of real and mythical animals. These inscriptions are estimated to be around 2,500 years old.

In antiquity, Somaliland was a vital hub for international maritime trade. Many historians believe this region may have been the ancient Land of Punt.

Traders here exchanged gold, ivory, frankincense, and myrrh with many civilizations. These included the Egyptians, Phoenicians, Babylonians, Indians, Chinese, and Romans. Egyptians recorded expeditions to Punt during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut. To move cargo, merchants used a traditional Somali maritime vessel called a beden. For centuries, Somali and Arab merchants also controlled the lucrative spice trade. They kept the source of cinnamon a secret from the Greeks and Romans. This trade made the region very prosperous.

Various Islamic kingdoms and sultanates have shaped the political history of the area. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Adal Sultanate was based in Zeila.

Later, the Isaaq Sultanate emerged during the middle of the 18th century. The Isaaq people trace their lineage to Sheikh Ishaaq bin Ahmed. He was an Islamic scholar who arrived in the 12th or 13th century.

The ruins of the city of Maduna show evidence of Islamic civilization from the 15th to 17th centuries. The city features a large rectangular mosque with walls standing 3 metres high.

The modern political era began with British involvement in the late 19th century. The United Kingdom signed agreements with various clans to establish the Somaliland Protectorate. On 26 June 1960, the United Kingdom granted formal independence to the State of Somaliland.

However, this independence lasted only five days. On 1 July 1960, Somaliland voluntarily united with the former Italian Somalia. This union formed the Somali Republic. This period of unification eventually led to significant political tension and conflict.

Following the Ogaden War, the Barre regime in Somalia enacted harsh policies against the Isaaq clan. This led to a ten-year war of independence. In 1991, Somaliland declared its independence once again.

The government views itself as the successor state to British Somaliland. Since 1991, the territory has been governed by democratically elected officials. They continue to seek formal recognition from the international community. On 26 December 2025, Israel became the first UN member state to formally recognise Somaliland's sovereignty.

Today, Somaliland maintains complex relationships with its neighbors and the world. It hosts representative offices from countries like Ethiopia and Taiwan.

However, Somalia does not recognise Somaliland's independence. Instead, Somalia regards the territory as one of its own federal member states. Internal stability also faces challenges. In 2022, a conflict in Las Anod caused Somaliland to lose control of significant eastern territory. This area is now managed by the SSC-Khatumo administration.
