Anthropological research suggests the area contains significant records of how humans developed. Scientists have identified hominid remains, such as the fossil known as Buia Madam Buya, dating back 1 million years. These remains may represent a link between Homo erectus and archaic Homo sapiens. The Danakil Depression is considered a major site for these evolutionary processes.

Around 2,000 BC, parts of the region were likely part of the Land of Punt. This kingdom was famous for exporting gold, ivory, and aromatic resins. Later, the Kingdom of D'mt flourished from the tenth to fifth centuries BC.

The D'mt people used irrigation schemes and plows to grow millet. They also manufactured iron tools and weapons. The capital of D'mt is believed to have been at the massive temple complex in Yeha.

The Kingdom of Aksum was one of the most powerful empires in antiquity.

Operating from approximately 100 to 940 AD, it was a major trading empire. Aksumite rulers minted their own currency to facilitate international trade. The kingdom was so influential that the founder of Manichaeism called it one of the four great powers of the world. Under the ruler Ezana, the kingdom adopted Christianity in the fourth century.

Modern political history has been defined by shifting foreign control and struggles for sovereignty. In 1865, the Khedivate of Egypt ruled much of the coastal lowlands. This territory was transferred to Italy in February 1885.

Italian troops moved from Massawa into the highlands, forming the colony of Italian Eritrea in 1889.

This colonial rule lasted until 1942, when British Military Administration took over during World War II. Following a 1952 UN decision, Eritrea entered a ten-year federal status with Ethiopia. However, Ethiopia annexed Eritrea in 1962. This led to the Eritrean War of Independence, fought by the Eritrean Liberation Front.
