The revolt was led by a man named Ali ibn Muhammad. He worked with people called Zanj. The Zanj were Africans brought to work in the salt marshes. Their work was very hard and life was miserable. Ali promised them wealth and a better life. Many people joined him. This included slaves and free people. They even built their own fortresses.
