It sits near the countries of Eritrea and Djibouti. The region shares borders with several other Ethiopian areas like Tigray and Somali. Its capital is a planned city called Semera. This city sits on the paved Awash–Assab highway. Many people call this the homeland of the Afar people.

The land here is shaped by powerful forces. The north contains the Afar Triangle. This is part of the Great Rift Valley. It includes the Danakil Depression, which is very low. In fact, it is one of the lowest spots in Africa. In 2005, a giant rift opened in just a few days. This happened when the Dabbahu Volcano erupted. The lava flowed underground and cooled to form a wide crack. This shows how the Earth's plates are moving apart.

Nature is very active in this region. The ground is often made of basalt lava. Because of volcanoes, you can find minerals like salt and sulfur. There are also hot springs and geothermal energy sources. The area is mostly dry with little plant life. You might see plants like Dracaena ombet growing there.

Some animals live in the national parks. You can find cheetahs, ostriches, and the African wild ass.

Many people in Afar live as pastoralists. This means they move with their animals to find food. They keep many types of livestock. In 2003, nomadic people kept over 759,000 camels. They also kept millions of sheep and goats.

Most people in the region are Afar. They speak the Afar language. About 96% of the people follow the Muslim faith. The population is growing quickly in this developing region.

Scientists visit Afar to study the deep past. They have found amazing fossils here. In the 1970s, they found the famous skeleton named Lucy.

Another very old skeleton named Ardi was found too. Ardi is about 4.4 million years old. These bones help us understand how early humans lived. The region also has very salty lakes.
