This region is quite big in many ways. It is the largest region in Ethiopia by population. In 2017, the population was about 35,467,001 people. Many different towns are found here, such as Adama, Jimma, and Bishoftu. The capital is Addis Ababa, which is also called Finfinne. The name Finfinne refers to hot springs in the area.

Oromia sits in a central spot within Ethiopia. It borders many other places in the country. To the east is the Somali Region. To the north are the Amhara, Afar, and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. To the west are several areas, including the Gambela Region. The country of Kenya sits to the south.

Addis Ababa is an enclave, which means it is a place surrounded by Oromia. The Harari Region is also an enclave inside the east of Oromia.

History shows that Oromo people lived in the Ethiopian Highlands a long time ago. Muslim geographers and royal chronicles tell of these early times. Some old Arabic sources from the 13th century called a region Gazla. This land was near the equator and the Nile.

Historians think Gazla might be the southern highlands of Ethiopia. This area was a key path for trade. It helped move goods between the mountains and the sea coast.

The history of the region has seen many changes. The Oromo remained independent until the late 1800s. Emperor Menelik II tried to invade the territory several times. Between 1881 and 1886, his campaigns were not successful. The Arsi Oromo fought back with very strong resistance. They used fierce tactics against enemies with modern firearms. They were eventually defeated in 1886. Later, many groups fought for their rights and their own identity.

Today, Oromia has many different landscapes and cultures. You can see green plants in the Bale Mountains National Park.

The region is made of parts of former provinces like Bale, Arsi, and Shewa. Some borders between regions have been disputed in the past. For example, there were disagreements between Oromia and the Somali Region. In 2019, the Irreecha festival was celebrated in Addis Ababa. This was a big event because it had been banned for 150 years.
