Amhara has a very long and deep history. The recorded history of the area goes back to the early 13th century. In the past, the region was made of several provinces like Gojjam and Shewa. Many of these were ruled by local leaders called Ras or Negus. The Solomonic Dynasty rose to power in 1270 under Emperor Yekuno Amlak. For a long time, the emperors moved around between different places. Eventually, the city of Gondar became the imperial capital around the year 1600.

This royal enclosure was the home of emperors for over two hundred years. It contains about twenty different palaces and buildings. Lake Tana also has many islands with ancient monasteries on them.

Today, many people live in the Amhara Region. A census from 2007 showed that over 17 million people lived there. By 2022, the population was estimated to be about 32 million. Most people live in rural areas rather than in cities. While many live in towns like Dessie, Gondar, or Debre Birhan, the region faces some hard times. There has been conflict and war in recent years involving local groups and the government. These events have caused many people to leave their homes and have damaged property.
