It sits between Sudan and South Sudan. The main town is called Abyei Town. For a long time, people have argued about where the border lies. This is partly because of oil in the area.

Two main groups of people use this land. The Ngok Dinka live there. They are part of the Dinka people from the south. The Messiria are a group of Arab people from the north. They move their cattle to Abyei during the dry season.

There has been much fighting in this region. In 2008, heavy clashes broke out. These fights caused many deaths. Many people also had to leave their homes. Some say Abyei Town was almost destroyed. To help settle the fights, leaders went to a court in The Hague. This court is called the Permanent Court of Arbitration. They worked to redraw the lines of the area. This was done to help bring peace to the land.
