This area has more rain and fresh water.

The land has many different parts. The east has sandy hills called goz. The north meets the Sahara Desert. Some areas have wadis. These are paths where water flows when it rains. In the west, there is hard basement rock. This rock is not good for farming.

Darfur has a very long history. Many ruling families lived there. For a long time, it was an independent sultanate. This means it was a land ruled by a sultan.

Since 2003, there has been a hard conflict in the region. This has caused a great emergency for the people. Many people had to leave their homes. Some live in camps for displaced people.
