It was in parts of modern Chad and Sudan. People there kept many cattle. They also traded goods across the desert. This made the empire very wealthy.

In 1906, France began a war to rule Wadai. A leader named Dud Murra fought to keep his land free. He had a strong army of horse riders.

Dud Murra used many guns to defend his people. He got these guns through trade. The French used their own soldiers and local allies. The fighting was very hard for both sides.

In 1909, the French took the capital city, Abéché. Dud Murra did not stop fighting. He moved to other areas to lead his people. He even won some big battles against the French.

Eventually, the French sent more troops to win. Dud Murra had to surrender in 1911. The war caused much sadness. Many people died from the fighting and from hunger. By 1912, the French had full control of the region.
