Sultanate of Agadez

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Long ago, the Tuareg people started a kingdom. This was the Sultanate of Agadez. It began around the year 1405. The kingdom was in the Aïr Mountains. This area is near the Sahara desert in Niger.

The first leader was named Yunus. He was a smart choice. He was a neutral person. This helped different tribes settle their fights. Later, the seat of power moved to the city of Agadez. This city was a big center for trade. People came from far away to buy and sell goods.

History was not always easy for the kingdom. In the year 1500, the Songhai Empire took over. Later, the Sultanate became free again. In the 1700s, new groups moved into the area. This caused some unrest. By the year 1850, an explorer called the city a ghost town.

In 1906, the French took control of the land. Today, the sultan is still a leader in Niger. He is a non-sovereign monarch. This means he does not rule a whole country. He still helps with important tasks. He helps with schools and collecting taxes.
