Sultanate of Agadez

history Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Sultanate of Agadez was a special Berber kingdom. It sat in the Aïr Mountains in north-central Niger. This area is right at the edge of the huge Sahara desert.

The people who lived there were called the Tuareg. For many years, this kingdom helped people trade goods. It connected the Hausa Kingdoms to North Africa. This made the region a very important place for business.

The kingdom started around the year 1405. At that time, different Tuareg groups were having many fights. They needed a fair way to settle their many disputes. The first leader was a man named Yunus. He was a very smart choice for a leader. His father was a Tuareg from Targa in Libya. His mother was a local woman. This background meant he was neutral between the different groups.

Because he was neutral, he could help keep the peace.

Later, the center of power moved to the city of Agadez. This city was founded in 1413. A leader named Alxasan moved the seat of power there. The city was home to many different people. You could find Tuareg groups and Hausa merchants there. These merchants even started indigo dyeing shops.

The city was a busy place for everyone. Many tribes had their own special areas in the city. However, most people still lived a nomadic life moving around.

History brought many changes to the Sultanate. In the year 1500, the Songhai Empire conquered the land. A Hausa captain named Muhammadu Kanta led a campaign against Agadez. Later, the Sultanate became independent again after the Songhai were defeated. In the 1700s, new groups moved into the Aïr region. This caused some unrest between the different tribes.

By 1850, an explorer named Heinrich Barth called the city a ghost town. Eventually, the French took control in 1906.

Today, the Sultanate is still a part of Niger. The leader is called an amenukal or a sultan. He is a non-sovereign monarch. This means he does not rule the whole country. He still has many important jobs to do. He helps with school registration and collecting taxes.

The people of the Sultan are called the Kel Amenukal. They still keep their special traditions alive today.
