Askia Muhammad I was a very important leader in West Africa. He was the first ruler of the Askia dynasty in the Songhai Empire. People often call him Askia the Great. He ruled from the year 1493 until 1528. Under his leadership, the Songhai Empire grew to be the largest in West African history.

His empire reached far into many different lands. It stretched to the Hausa states near Kano in modern Nigeria. It also reached from Taghaza in the north to Futa Djallon in the south. It went from Air in the northeast to the borders of Yatenga in the south.

Before he was king, Muhammad was a powerful general. He served under a ruler named Sunni Ali. After Sunni Ali died, his son Sunni Baru became the leader in 1492. Muhammad disagreed with how Baru ruled. He believed Baru was not a faithful Muslim. Muhammad gained support from religious scholars in the city of Timbuktu. In April 1493, he fought the Battle of Anfao near the city of Gao. Muhammad won this battle and took the throne for himself.

This was the start of his long time as a ruler.

Askia Muhammad changed how the empire worked every day. He did not just use old ways to rule. Instead, he built a new system of government. He divided the empire into different provinces. He appointed governors to lead these areas. He also created many ministries to handle special jobs. These jobs included finance, justice, and even farming. He even had a ministry for agriculture and one for forests.

He also made a professional army. These soldiers were dedicated to the empire and could travel far away.

Trade and religion were also very important to his rule. He made Islam a main part of the empire. In 1496, he went on a long trip called a hajj to Mecca. He traveled with 500 horsemen and 1,000 soldiers. When he came back, he had many new titles. He used his power to help trade grow with Europe and Asia. He made sure trade was fair by setting standard rules. He also created a system for taxes and checked trade routes. This helped the empire become very wealthy.

As Askia Muhammad got older, things became difficult for him. He was over 70 years old when he began to lose his sight. His many sons also fought with each other for power. In 1528, his son Askia Musa forced him to step down. The old king was sent to live on an island in the Niger River. Later, he was able to return to the city of Gao. He lived there until he died in 1538. Many people in West Africa today are still related to his large family.
