He served as the second president of the country from 1973 until 1994. He was born on March 8, 1937, in a place called Gisenyi. As a young man, he studied mathematics and humanities at the College of Saint Paul. Later, he went to medical school at Lovanium University. His journey to the presidency began with a sudden change in power. In 1973, he was the Army Chief of Staff and the minister of defense. During a coup, he removed the first president, Grégoire Kayibanda, from power. Habyarimana then became the new leader of Rwanda. He created a single political party called the MRND. Under his rule, the country became a one-party state. All citizens were members of this party from the day they were born.

Life under Habyarimana's government had many different sides. On one hand, he helped build many useful things for the country. He helped create new secondary schools and health centers in many towns. His government also worked on roads, water supplies, and electricity. He even helped with reforestation to fix the land. On the other hand, many people remained very poor. He used rules that made things unfair for the Tutsi people. He also required people to participate in loud celebrations to show they supported him.

In 1990, a big conflict began called the Rwandan Civil War. A group called the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) attacked the government. These rebels were mostly Tutsi refugees who came from Uganda. Habyarimana asked France for help to fight the invasion.

However, the peace did not last long. On April 6, 1994, a very serious event occurred near Kigali.

Habyarimana's private plane was shot down by a missile. The crash killed him and the President of Burundi, Cyprien Ntaryamira. No one knows for sure exactly how or why the plane was hit. This sudden death caused great tension in the region. It helped spark the Rwandan genocide, which was a very dark time in history.
