Pierre Nkurunziza was a major leader in the country of Burundi. He served as the ninth president for nearly 15 years. This made him the longest-serving president in his country's history. He was born on December 18, 1964, in the capital city of Bujumbura.

Before he was a politician, he was an educator. He earned a degree in physical education in 1990. He even worked as a football coach for local teams.

His path to leadership began during a very difficult time. A civil war broke out in Burundi after 1993. This conflict caused much sadness and fighting between different groups. Nkurunziza had to flee his home in 1995. He joined a rebel group called the CNDD-FDD.

He rose through the ranks of this group quickly. By 2001, he had become its leader. He helped lead the group toward making peace with the government.

Nkurunziza first became president in August 2005. During his first term, he worked to rebuild the nation. He used the Arusha Accords to help different ethnic groups share power. These agreements helped Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa people hold government positions. He also helped end the fighting with the final rebel group in 2008. In 2009, the country's debt was even cancelled by the Paris Club.

However, his later years in power were marked by much tension. In 2015, Nkurunziza said he wanted to run for a third term. Many people felt this broke the rules of the Arusha Accords. This announcement led to many protests and unrest in the streets.

There was also a failed military coup in May 2015. During this time, many people left the country to find safety elsewhere.

Nkurunziza stayed in office until the year 2020. He helped change the constitution in 2018 to allow longer terms. He eventually announced he would step down after his term ended. He supported Évariste Ndayishimiye to be the next leader.

Nkurunziza died in June 2020, just before the power transfer. People disagreed on whether he died of a heart attack or COVID-19. Ndayishimiye became the new president ten days later.
