He was born in 1925 in a village called Akokoro. He went to Makerere University to study. Later, he joined a group to help his country gain freedom. In 1962, Obote became the prime minister. At that time, Mutesa II was the president.

Things changed in 1966. Obote took more power and made himself president. He led a group called the UPC. He tried new ways to run the economy. These ways were called socialism. But these changes caused problems. There was not enough food. Many people also faced unfair treatment.

In 1971, a man named Idi Amin took power by force. Obote had to leave Uganda. He lived in Tanzania for many years. He tried to come back to lead again. He was elected president once more in 1980. This election was not seen as fair. His second time in power ended in 1985. A man named Tito Okello took over. Obote lived the rest of his life away from home.
