He was born in a small place called Port-Salut on July 15, 1953. His early life was quite hard because his family was poor. After his father died, he moved to the big city of Port-au-Prince with his mother. He studied very hard and became a priest in the Catholic Church. As a priest, he taught something called liberation theology. This idea focuses on helping people who are struggling. He wanted to make sure the poor were treated fairly. He even started a home for street children called Lafanmi Selavi. This name means "Family is Life."

Aristide became a voice for people who felt ignored. For many years, Haiti was ruled by leaders called dictators. These leaders were part of the Duvalier family. Aristide spoke out against them in his sermons. This was a very brave choice. Because of his words, he faced many hard times. He was even sent away to live in Montreal for three years. In 1988, a very sad event happened at his church, St. Jean Bosco. Armed men attacked the people there. Aristide survived the attack, but his church was burned down. He later left the priesthood to focus on politics.

In 1990, Aristide ran for president of Haiti. He led a group called the Lavalas movement. This group represented many poor people. He won the election in December 1990 with 67% of the vote. This was a big moment for Haiti. Many people saw it as the first fair election in the country's history. He was officially sworn in as president on February 7, 1991. He wanted to fix the country's money problems and help the economy. He also tried to make the military follow civilian rules. However, his work faced a lot of pushback from powerful groups.

Things became difficult for his government very quickly. In September 1991, the army led a coup. A coup is when the military takes control by force. A general named Raoul Cédras led this change. Aristide was forced to leave Haiti and live in exile. He stayed away until 1994, when he returned to power. During his next years in office, he did many helpful things. He built new schools and hospitals for the people. He also helped raise the minimum wage for workers. In 1996, he showed great leadership by peacefully handing power to a new leader.

Aristide's time as a leader had many ups and downs. He won another election in November 2000. He tried to help the poor while also working with big international banks. But he faced more opposition from political groups. In February 2004, another coup happened. This time, people from across the Dominican border invaded. Aristide was removed from office again. He lived in South Africa and the Central African Republic for many years. He finally came home to Haiti in 2011. Today, he works through his own foundation and university to help his country.
