He helped lead the country during its most difficult times. Pétion was born in Port-au-Prince in 1770. His father was a wealthy man from France. His mother was a free woman of color named Ursula. Because of his family, he went to France to study. He attended the Military Academy in Paris to learn how to be a soldier. He became a very skilled expert in using artillery, which are large guns.

During the Haitian Revolution, Pétion fought to change his home. He first fought against British forces in Saint-Domingue. Later, he joined a group of rebels to fight the French. He made a big decision to work with Jean-Jacques Dessalines. This partnership helped the rebels win a major victory. In 1803, they won the Battle of Vertières. This victory led to Haiti becoming an independent nation in 1804. Pétion was one of the founding fathers of this new country.

After the revolution, the country was split into two parts. Pétion became the first president of the Republic of Haiti in 1807. He ruled the southern part of the land. He had many disagreements with another leader named Henri Christophe. Christophe wanted to be a king in the north. Pétion and Christophe could not agree on how to lead. A peace treaty was finally signed in 1810 to stop the fighting. This treaty allowed the country to stay split for a while.

Many people in Haiti liked Pétion very much. They gave him the nickname "Papa Bon-Cœur," which means "good-hearted father."

He took land away from the very rich people. He gave that land to the poor farmers instead. This helped many families grow their own food. Pétion also believed that learning was a great tool. He started a school called the Lycée Pétion in Port-au-Prince. He even helped a leader named Simón Bolívar fight for freedom in other places.

History tells us different stories about how Pétion's life ended. He died on March 29, 1818. The official report said he died from yellow fever. This is a sickness that was common in the Caribbean. However, some historians have other ideas. Some think he became very sad because of politics. They believe he may have stopped eating because he lost the will to live. After he died, his friend Jean-Pierre Boyer became the next president. Boyer eventually brought the whole country back together.
