He was born in Port-au-Prince in 1770. His father was French and his mother was a free woman of color. Pétion went to France to study at a military school. He became a very skilled soldier.

During the Haitian Revolution, Pétion fought for freedom. He joined forces with Jean-Jacques Dessalines to fight the French. This helped Haiti become an independent nation in 1804. Later, Pétion became the first president of the Republic of Haiti. This was the southern part of the country.

Many people called him "Papa Bon-Cœur." This means "good-hearted father." He took land from the rich. He gave that land to the people so they could farm. He also started a school called the Lycée Pétion. He believed that education was very important.

Pétion also helped other leaders. He gave help to Simón Bolívar. Bolívar used this aid to free other countries. Pétion died in 1818. Some say he died from yellow fever. Others think he died from sadness. Jean-Pierre Boyer became the next president.
