André Rigaud was a leader during the Haitian Revolution. He was born in 1761 in a place called Saint-Domingue. His father was a wealthy French planter. His mother was a slave woman. Rigaud learned to work with gold in France.

When he grew up, he became a leader for free people of color. These were people who were not white but were also not slaves. He led an army in the south part of the land. He did not want to share power with Toussaint Louverture. Toussaint was a leader in the north. This led to the War of the South in 1799. Rigaud lost this war.

He went to France, but he was caught by an American ship. He was a prisoner for a short time. He later went back to Haiti with a French army. This army wanted to bring back slavery. They did not win. Jean-Jacques Dessalines led the land to win its freedom. The land became the nation of Haiti. Rigaud tried to lead the south one last time. He died in 1811. His tomb sits on a small hill near Les Cayes.
