Ribault went back to France to get supplies. While he was away, the fort was lost. A fire and fighting hurt the settlers there.

Ribault returned to Florida later. He helped start Fort Caroline near Jacksonville. He wanted to help the colony grow. But war in France kept him away for a time. This caused food shortages at the fort. In 1565, Ribault sailed back with 800 people.
